A LEGACY OF
PLAY, PERFORMANCE & COMMUNITY
Founded in 1991 by artists Dean Bareham and Xstine Cook, Green Fools Theatre was born from a passion for physical theatre, puppetry, mask, stilt walking, and circus arts. Inspired by their training at the Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre in California, they envisioned a company that could tour internationally while building a creative community at home in Calgary.
Over the decades, Green Fools has grown into a celebrated charity that creates, builds, and inspires through circus arts, puppetry, and theatre. From unforgettable community events like the April Fool’s Day Parade and Halloween Howl, to collaborations with orchestras, theatres, and festivals across Canada and beyond, our work has always blended artistry with a deep sense of play and connection.

COLLABORATION & INNOVATION
Our history is woven with the contributions of extraordinary artists and partners who have helped shape our journey.
From early collaborations with The Old Trout Puppet Workshop and circus educator Neal Rempel, to unforgettable partnerships with Cirque du Soleil’s Cirque du Monde, Calgary Young People’s Theatre, and Ghost River Theatre, Green Fools has always embraced the spirit of collaboration.
These partnerships have expanded our reach, strengthened our artistic voice, and deepened our commitment to youth and community.

A COMMITMENT TO YOUTH & SOCIAL CIRCUS
Since our first Social Circus programs in northern British Columbia, Green Fools has shared circus arts with youth across Canada and as far away as Lesotho, South Africa.
Today, our Social Circus programs have empowered more than 11,000 at-risk children and teens with free access to circus training that builds confidence, resilience, and belonging.
This work continues to guide our future, driven by the belief that circus can change lives one child at a time.
