The Green Fools upcoming show “Once Upon an Atom Bomb” has many
artists hard at work to see it come to life. One of those special artists is Dean
Bareham, Co-Artistic Director and co-founder of Green Fools Theatre. So, when
corresponding with Dean what was his favorite topic? Puppets. This makes a lot
of sense considering he is the designer for all of the show’s puppets and he built a
majority of them. This is an impressive task to say the least.
There are challenges that come with building the puppets. Dean’s first challenge was
the time crunch, so many puppets in a short amount of time. His second challenge
came with one specific puppet. “Figuring out how to make the father marionette
have the kind of movements to make him come alive (was a challenge),” says Dean.
So what might a typical workday look like for this puppet-making master? “There
is no typical work day for me. Some days I do tons of emailing, some days I make
puppets, some days I’m a clown and some days I’m teaching Circus in the Arctic,”
says Dean who is in fact currently teaching Circus in the Arctic.
Since this amazing show is filled with puppets one might start to wonder what
they would be like if they were made into a puppet. Dean describes his puppet-self
as “Handsome and funny.” The talented puppet maker gave us his final thoughts on
the show saying, “There is so much talent working on this show, it’s bound to be
awesome!” Well said sir, well said.

TEACHING CIRCUS IN KUUJJUAQ

Dean (seen here with aerialist and co-instructor Rebecca Leonard) travelled nearly as far north as you can go to Kuujjuaq to teach with Cirque Du Monde. This great work reaches kids in remote communities, many at risk and facing huge challenges.  These circus workshops literally save lives and bring fun, hope, joy and play to this snowy land!

WRITING IN THE MOUNTAINS

Meanwhile, Jennie works with Eric Rose and David Rhymer on Once Upon An Atomic Bomb, Green Fools upcoming puppet/ physical theatre show to premiere March 2012. Sneak peek lyric excerpt:

At this rotation

Hurtling through the sky

Its no wonder why I

Can barely hold on

I can’t let you go

Sub atomic life we are living

Until the switch is flicked off

In the dangerous dark of this night

I cannot see your light

But I can’t let you go

All at once somehow then I see you

Sparkling in the sky

And I know that love

Does not die

We are all pieces of

The same exploded star

In one moment, we are changed forever
